That\u2019s just a fancy way of saying that a\nlaser is a concentrated form of light. These incredibly honed beams of light\nare easy to control and allow for precise treatment for gum problems. Because\nthe beam cauterizes as it goes, bleeding is minimized. Recovery time is much\nfaster, and it drastically lowers the need for over-the-counter painkillers\nafter treatment. The laser also sterilizes the area and prevents bacterial\ninfections. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Can Laser Dentistry Treat?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Laser dentistry is very effective as periodontal therapy \u2013\nthat is, treating gum disease. Your dentist will use the laser to remove the\ninflamed gum tissue from the tooth root. When the root is exposed, the dentist\nwill then perform a root scaling procedure. He or she will scrape excess plaque\nthat has built up below the gum line. This allows the area between the gum and\nthe tooth to regenerate, completely bacteria-free. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lasers are also great for treating \u201cgummy\u201d smiles \u2013 where\ntoo much of your gums and not enough of your teeth are visible when you grin. This\nis generally more of a cosmetic procedure, but it\u2019s still very easily done.\nYour dentist will use the laser to sculpt your gumline into a more desired\nshape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is Laser Dentistry Really Painless?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Your dentist will make sure to numb you up with a local\nanesthetic before using any lasers, just to be safe. Because there is no need\nfor scalpels, gum surgery with lasers is vastly less painful. Since it also\nsterilizes the area, there is less chance of a bacterial infection causing\ndiscomfort. Additionally, there are no stitches to worry about afterwards,\nwhich minimizes itching. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After you receive laser gum surgery, your gums may be a\nlittle sensitive for about a week. This discomfort is mild and shouldn\u2019t\ninterfere with your daily activities like speaking and eating. During this\nrecovery period, it\u2019s best to avoid crunchy or spicy food, as that may irritate\nthe already sensitive gum tissue.
