Genetic Factors That Can Affect the Shade of Your Pearly Whites

You know that your parents can pass on their eye and hair color, but what about the shade of their teeth? While daily wear and tear do contribute to dental staining, there are actually genetic factors at play that can make it more challenging to maintain bright pearly whites. If you suspect yellow teeth might run in the family, keep reading. You might just find that your gut feeling is justified!

The Science of Dental Stains

Before digging into the meat of the subject, you might want to know how teeth become stained in the first place. Similar to your kitchen countertops, the surface of your teeth have microscopic holes known as pores. Color pigments from the food and drink you enjoy can slip past these pores, and if given enough time to settle, will essentially become trapped below the surface and cause staining.

Genetics and Your Smile

With this in mind, there are a couple of different ways genetics can make it more or less easy for foreign color pigments to tint your teeth. Here are some dental traits you may have very well inherited from your family tree:

  • Thin Enamel. Enamel is the outermost layer of your teeth. If you’re born with thinner-than-average enamel, the darker layers underneath will be more visible, making your smile appear darker. Thin enamel also makes it easier for pigments to bypass your dental pores.
  • Naturally Shaded Teeth. Like hair and eyes, an individual’s tooth color can vary. Some people simply have teeth that lean more grey or yellow.
  • Dental Misalignment. Teeth that are crooked or overcrowded tend to be harder to clean thoroughly. It’s entirely possible your toothbrush isn’t able to remove staining pigments very effectively.

How Your Dentist Can Help

Even if you have deep stains or a chronically discolored smile, your dentist can help! Professional teeth whitening treatments utilize a special bleaching agent that’s specifically designed to slip through dental pores and remove unwanted pigments. Dental bonding and veneers, meanwhile, can conceal particularly stubborn stains behind a thin layer of tooth-colored materials.

A brighter and whiter smile is within your reach. Simply schedule a consultation with your dentist to find out which treatment would be best for you!
