What are Temporary Veneers, and Why Are They Necessary?

Getting veneers can be absolutely incredible for people who are interested in getting a beautiful, red-carpet-ready smile. You can cover up years worth of chips, cracks, discoloration, and even misalignment with just one treatment.

Miraculously, you can get those results after just two dental appointments—however, in between those appointments, you’ll probably have to wear something called temporary veneers in order to protect your teeth. If you want to learn a little bit more about the purpose of temporary veneers and what getting them will entail, here’s some information you might like to know.

Why Do I Need Temporary Veneers?

If you’ve ever actually seen a veneer in person, you’ve experienced firsthand how thin they are. However, they’re just thick enough that if you just plastered them onto your teeth, people would be able to tell that you’ve had dental work done.

For that reason, your dentist will need to remove a microscopic sliver of your enamel before getting your veneers. This is usually done as the first dental appointment when the initial designs for your veneers are developed.

This is where temporary veneers come in. When you’re missing enamel, your teeth are much more sensitive than they would be otherwise. Your veneers will be able to protect your teeth once you get them, but until then, you’ll need temporary veneers in order to protect your smile.

What is Wearing Temporary Veneers Like?

Temporary veneers are often made out of acrylic, and are attached to the teeth via a mild adhesive. They are designed to look a lot like your final veneers will, allowing you to get used to how they look and feel before getting your final prosthetic.

However, they aren’t adhered to your teeth as strongly as your final prosthetic. As a result, many patients will need to adopt a soft food diet for the time that they’ll be wearing them. Fortunately, this should only be the case for a few weeks.

Temporary veneers can be an excellent trial run for your final prosthetic, so you can treat wearing them like a celebration of the great smile that’s to come!
